What the Baltic Dry Index measures — and how to read it
A reference guide to the composition, calculation and limits of the most widely quoted dry bulk freight benchmark.

The Baltic Dry Index is a composite freight benchmark published by the Baltic Exchange that reflects the cost of moving major dry bulk commodities by sea. It is compiled from time-charter assessments across the Capesize, Panamax and Supramax segments, each contributing a weighted share.
Because it is built from assessments of representative routes, the index tracks the earnings environment for owners rather than any single physical cargo price. It is therefore a measure of freight cost, not of commodity demand directly.
The index is frequently cited as a leading indicator of industrial activity, though analysts caution that fleet supply, port congestion and seasonal cargo patterns can move the index independently of underlying demand.
Readers should distinguish the headline index from its component indices and from individual route assessments, which can diverge significantly. Time-charter averages for each vessel size are typically the more useful reference for chartering decisions.
