Alkagesta expands commodity finance role in Malta
Commodity trader Alkagesta is leveraging global banking partnerships and expanded storage capacity to position Malta as a central hub for international trade finance and logistics.

MaltaInvest.mt reported that Alkagesta, a commodity trading firm established in 2018, has developed into a significant intermediary between Malta and international financial markets. The company currently maintains partnerships with 28 global banks and conducts operations across 42 countries. By channelling trade flows and capital through Malta, the firm has positioned the island as a hub for commodity finance. Alkagesta reports multi-billion dollar revenues and handles over seven million metric tons of commodities annually, utilising a network of international institutions to structure complex trade finance deals and manage associated risks through various insurance instruments.
The firm’s strategy relies on an extensive banking network that provides liquidity, hedging facilities, and letters of credit. These financial arrangements are designed to bring international capital into the Maltese economy. Alkagesta employs both traditional and innovative financing solutions to support its transactions, which often involve oil shipments backed by banking consortia. By structuring these deals to meet rigorous financial standards, the company aims to minimise risk for all involved parties, thereby attracting global clients who require high levels of reliability and compliance within their trade operations.
Physical infrastructure remains a core component of the company’s business model. Alkagesta has established a logistics network that includes key trading hubs across the Mediterranean, Central Asia, Europe, and Asia. A notable development is the firm’s secured storage capacity at the Evos terminal in Malta, which contributes to the island’s oil and fuel storage capabilities. Globally, the company now possesses access to more than 700,000 cubic meters of storage across locations including Turkey, Romania, and Singapore, allowing it to manage supply and demand imbalances and pursue arbitrage opportunities.
In 2024, Alkagesta sourced approximately seven million tonnes of commodities, ranging from refined petroleum fuels to biofuels and fertilisers. This volume has increased Malta’s profile as a location for commodity transit and financing rather than solely a bunkering stop. The company’s integrated supply chain model, which includes sourcing, storage, and end-to-end delivery control, is supported by regional operations teams. This approach is intended to ensure reliability for partners and provide the capacity to respond to market shifts, reinforcing Malta’s role in handling complex global trade flows.
Compliance and governance frameworks are central to the company’s operations, with dedicated committees overseeing audit, risk, and ESG standards. Alkagesta utilises digital tools, including Refinitiv World-Check and Seasearcher, to conduct due diligence and screen vessels and counterparties against sanctions and anti-money-laundering regimes. The firm maintains a policy of zero tolerance for unhedged price exposure. These practices are designed to meet the requirements of global banking partners and regulators, establishing the company as a credible participant in the commodity finance sector alongside major trading houses in London and Geneva.
